It's a way many of us like to spend our summer days...out riding horse. Reporter Sarah Gustin takes us to United Tribes Technical College and introduces us to one popular camp. (Shay Marcellais / Camper) This is actully kinda like school, but it is mixed with some fun too. It's the final week for the Nakotas on the Prairie, Science, Technology and Math Native American Culture Camp. About 25 kids ages nine through tweleve are spending their June days learning about insects...soil...even health and fitness. (Dr. Jennifer Janecek-Hartman / UTTC) Alot of the research shows that girls, especially, and especially girls of minorities, will check out, check out literally of science by the age of nine and grade four. So it is our hope that we get kids excited about math and science and just kinda peak their interest in the many different areas of math and science. But this year there is something different, not only are they spending their days in the classroom but also in the saddle. (Dr. Jennifer Janecek-Hartman / UTTC) Every year we add something new because the kids like it so much that we end up with repeaters. So you can't do the same thing all the time. This year we included much more the kids took to the horses like ducks to the water. So they are riding. Three days every week...the kids are in the arena. Learning it all...how to care for, handle, saddle...even ride a horse. And spending time with the horses...seems to be everyone's favorite part of the day. (Shay Marcellais / Camper) My favorite part about camp is when we go camping and we get to ride horses. And right over there is the horse that I ride. (Kyle DeCouteau / Camper) Ride the horses again and go camping. And how better to learn about horses than to be outside with them. The kids travel to Linton to actually see a wild herd of Nakota horses and spend their last two days camping in Medora. In Bismarck, Reporting for KX News, I am Sarah Gustin. This is the camp's seventh year. The camp is funded by NASA and the National Science Foundation.

Video: 4Hers Show Off

It's a year's worth of hard work and the culmination of efforts to be the best. All this week kids from across the county are participating in 4-H achievement days at the State Fair Center in Minot. Today kids were testing their horse riding and showmanship skills in front of judges. This event is just one of many ranging from static displays to showing animals. Gail Slinde is in charge of getting everything organized for the event this week. She says the the blue ribbon winners will go on to compete at the State Fair and that these projects are a great experience for kids... (Gail Slinde, Ward Co. 4-H) It does wonderful things for kids, foster leadership development, confidence, kids get used to standing in front of a judge and talking with them and performing in front of a judge. And they make friends from all over the county and all over the state once they make it to the state fair. More than 350 kids are participating in this year's Ward County 4H Achievement Days which runs through Thursday at the State Fair Center.

The grass is mowed, the arena is ready and the kids are using their last few days to practice. Reporter Sarah Gustin takes us to New Salem to get a taste of what you have the chance to experience this weekend. Some high school students are rehearsing for a different type of performance. (Abby Knoll / Barrel Racer) I am on him everdyday, for a couple hours, not always in the arena, but to just keep him in shape, but it is definitely life consuming. You know if I am not keeping him in shape, I am getting myself in shape. The New Salem Saddle Club is gearing up for its 30th annual high school rodeo. After months and months of preparing and practicing...the big weekend is finally here. They spend countless hours practicing...for a performance that lasts mere seconds. (Abby Knoll / Barrel Racer) It is just an aderiline, it is a rush to be in it. You know when some kids are out doing things they shouldn't be, I am at home in the arena, working with my horse and getting him ready for this weekend. The High School rodeo season started in April. Contestants accumulate points at each rodeo they participate in throughout the season. The New Salem Rodeo is the finale for the year. And the points earned at this rodeo...will be the final decision for which contests will be heading to the state finals. (Carla Nelson / New Salem Saddle Club Sec./ Tres.) We feel that this is just a very good project, it is not only keeping alive our western hertiage, but dedicating to our youth, something we as parents have enjoyed in the past, being around horses and rodeo it has helped us grow and mature and it is just a wonderful thing for these kids to experience. (Tate Schwagler / Team Roper) I just grew up on a ranch and rode since I was a little kid...it is what everybody does...rodeo. And it sounds like rodeo has been big in New Salem area for a long time. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the New Salem Saddle Club. (Sarah Gustin / KX news) I might be the only one sitting in these seats today, but if you would like to take part in the action...make sure to stop out on sunday. Reporting for KX, News I am Sarah Gustin. More than 200 contestants will be competing in 13 different events. If you are interested in seeing what these kids have been working so hard for...the action starts at 10 am this Sunday.
