Fills in the Gaps March 17, 2008
In addition to answering many questions you might have, this book also fills in gaps you probably don't know exist.

An excellent chronological biography for the lover of all things James Herriot.

Lots of fun to read but not much new January 7, 2008
I was hoping to learn more about the characters and relationships of the main human characters in the real life. Unfortunately, the book did not offer much in this respect. There was much repetition of the stories that a good Herriot fan would already know well from his books. I got an impression that in real life the relationships of the partners in the practice were less charming than in the books and TV series. But the book still was fun to read.

I had read some good and some bad reviews about this book. I am a read over-and-over again fan of James Herriott books. Overall, I am glad I purchased this book. It gives a look behind the scenes of the stories you read in Herriott's books, tells who some of the characters are based on, what some of the stories are based on, etc. If I were really critiquing the book, I would say that the pictures included are not really the ones I wanted to see, I would ask for more of Siegfried and Tristan and Helen, and not old school buddies that I haven't really been introduced to, but I am still glad to have read and purchased the book. It seems as if Herriott (Wight) was just as good of a man as you think he is. Glad to know.

Getting to know James Herriott November 26, 2007
This biography involves you slowly but surely into "James Herriott's" life, and the more I read, the more emotionally involved I became. It was inspiring to read of his path to success, as well, with the perspective of supposed rejections and detours that led to his ultimate success. It was also intriguing to get to know his heart and his character that created a life of such love and success. In other words, it is inspiring to get to know Alfred Wight. I wanted many more photographs of "Siegfried" and "Tristan" and "Helen" at the ages they were in the books. I would have loved photographs of some of the other characters. There was only "t'vet with t'badger." The photographs were of people not introduced in the books, but central in his life. I would have loved to know more details about the subsequent lives of Siegfried and Tristan, as well. This book is a loving look at a great man, greatly humble, and anyone who enjoys his books will enjoy his biography.

Only for hard-core fans November 13, 2007
I'm a big fan of the James Herriot books, and I expect to keep rereading them for years. I'm glad I read this one, but I won't pick it up again. He's not the same caliber writer as his dad, and the book could have been 25 percent shorter without losing any meat.
