A good read, in dot point form. Good as a quick reference or a long read.

This book has helped me so much in understanding my formerly abused rescue horse. Simple strategies for dealing with problems safely and effectively - with very happy results. I wish there was a book like this for everything!

5 out of 5 stars Considering This Book   December 26, 2006

I haven't yet bought this book, but I was reading the reviews and wanted to respond to Hoppy and his write-up about his 5th "wife". I'm assuming Hoppy that you have already had her examined and have eliminated the possibility that it could be a physical problem causing her to throw you to the ground??? If she's as overweight as you say and she's carrying a lot of girth, that could be putting a lot of pressure on her spine, even to where it could be pinching a nerve. Your added weight could literally be the "straw breaking the camel's back" so to speak. I just wanted to mention this. Problems with horses aren't strictly behavioral. I'm going to have to buy and read this book. It sounds like a must-have. By the way, I put the five stars because it's required to fill that out. I'm going by others' reviews at this moment.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book   December 1, 2006

I bought this book when we first bought our large pony more than 2 years ago. This book has been a great help, not just explaining what to do in a situation, but more importantly what not to do. That portion was heaven sent. I have given this book as a present to 3 of my friends and they loved it. I was lucky enough to meet the author at the Equine Affaire in November and found her to be a lovely person and very helpful. I think this book would be a help to anyone, especially people who have just started out and are just figuring out the predator/prey differences with people and horses.

5 out of 5 stars Imperfect but a Great Start!!!   October 20, 2006

I purchased this book in an effort to make good on the commitment I made to my hulking 5th wife. She (Bessie) has been increasingly difficult to manage and in general, a bit of an overweight wild bronco. I, semi-correctly, thought this book would help. I note the following from the book's description:
"What Your Horse Wants You to Know" focuses on improving your horse's behavior on the ground, so you can develop relationship and communications skills without the more challenging problems that arise once you're on his (or in my case, her) back.
This helpful book suggests that I use my entire body to communicate with my horse (I do this and then some). It's suggested that I show my horse that I respect her needs and feelings (I haven't been doing this). I'm told to be patient and consistent with my horse while having fun (I've been neither). And this fine book suggests I try to understand my horse's fears (this is impossible). I am supposed to respond appropriately to physiological or nutritional problems (I have doing this for years to no avail--the woman is more of a cow than a horse). And lastly, I should use praise to make my horse feel confident and successful (this one is hard to do given my current situation; however, I am trying).

As you can see, there are some helpful tips to dealing with a difficult spouse. I've noted marginal improvement to her overall behavior and what I perceive to be some improved confidence--particularly when I pat her on the head although I was thrown to the ground the last time I tried to climb on her back. A worthy effort and a crossover success story. Well done!!
