Customer Reviews: Essential training material - a must have May 23, 2006 4 out of 4 found this review helpful I must respectfully disagree with reviewer C.E. Smith. This DVD is an excellent companion to the Horse, Follow Closely book; and is, in fact, good enough on its own to instruct you how to ground start and work your horse. In addition, this DVD is critical for anyone working a problem horse. The troubles they are having relate to lack of trust issues with their mounts. As Pony says - if you allow your horse to get injured going into the trailer, you go down in rank as alpha horse with him. How much daily life with our horses are we not observing as we should, or failing to prove and maintain our status in the two-horse relationship? And then we are surprised when they act up and want to challenge our leadership. The information in this DVD will help you learn how to observe and understand horse communication so that surprises don't come down the road. The DVD presents simple to complex exercises, along with the reasoning behind them, to relationship-train your horse. I clearly got the fundamentals, and by observing Pony Boy's body language, came away with a vivid understanding of how he used the horse's language to communicate. It's more helpful to me to see Pony adopt a non-threatening stance, then for someone to try to word that body language into a descriptive sentence. Out of all the natural horsemanship trainers, Pony Boy ranks among the top. There are gems of information in here that you will take with you for life. In fact, the content and quality of the information mirror what Clinton Anderson teaches. The problem with this DVD is how the information is presented. Perhaps Pony Boy should have had a better Director. Pony Boy sits and lectures/explains the process of how he does his ground work with the horse. Then Pony Boy demonstrates what he lectured/explained but he does not use a microphone to make comments and explain his actions. Clinton Anderson explains his ground work as he stands with the horse and as he works with the horse. This method of demonstration is far more effective as it is much easier for the viewer to remember the "Show and Tell" examples. As previously cited, Pony Boy has the information but the Clinton Anderson DVD delivers it much better! What they are teaching/learning is what Native Americans have been practicing and using for decades. While many trainers out there give you exercises to work on with your horse to solve problems, they only know that the exercises work, not why. GaWaNi Pony Boy takes you inside the mind of the horse, to understand how horses think and why. This teaching gives you insight into why the exercises of other trainers work and Why they work. It is also a great help in developing your own exercises to work on difficulties you may have with your horse. Same incredible scenery, and the 10 steps shown in the book Horse, Follow Closely. Basically, this DVD is the book in "living" form, lots of great commentary by GaWaNi, a great starter DVD to those who are not familiar with Native American Horsemanship history, philosophy or ways of training a horse, and one of the most interesting video's out there. I like that it is now on DVD with a menu so I can select scenes and get right to where I want to be, which was a hassle with the VHS set. If you haven't had the chance to see the DVD's in The Simple Truth About Horses series, check them out as well.
